Orange Pomander Recipe Coockery Show

In this video, Betty demonstrates how to make an Orange Pomander. This is a project that I like to do during the holiday season. An orange pomander is basically an orange that is studded with cloves and tied with a ribbon, so that it can be hung in a closet to give off the aroma of orange and cloves. You can also place several of them in a bowl to make a nice centerpiece for your table. When they have completely dried, you may put them in dresser drawers to make everything smell wonderful. These also make great gifts or party favors. To do this project, wash a fresh orange in warm soapy water to remove any wax that may have been added. I find it easier to tie ribbon around the orange to make 4 sections at the very beginning, leaving enough ribbon to make a bow at the top of a loop for hanging. The ribbon should be about ½-inch wide. After securing the ribbon with straight pins, you may decorate each of the four sections in any way that you like. I decided to use a plain design by just making a single arc down the center of each of the four quarters formed by a brown felt ribbon. To insert the cloves, use a skewer, nail, or knitting needle to punch a hole about ½-inch deep and push a whole clove, spike-end first, into the orange. If this makes your finger sore, use a thimble to protect your finger. Place the next clove as close as possible without the two cloves touching. Continue until you finish your design in each quarter. You may have a different design in each quarter, or be consistent with the same design all around the orange. You may even fill an entire quarter with cloves for a very nice look. It's all up to you! This is a nice holiday project that you can do with children. You can do any part of this project that might be difficult or harmful ahead of time, and let the children help with the finishing—or they may just enjoy watching the process. Clove-Studded Red Cinnamon Pears Recipe Cookery Show

Stud each pear quarter with a few whole cloves. Put into sterilized 1 quart glass jar with screw lid. Combine reserved pear syrup, sugar, and cinnamon drops in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add a few drops of red food coloring, if deeper red color is desired. Let cool for about ½ hour, and then pour over studded pear quarters and seal. Refrigerate. Serve as a condiment for ham or other meats, or as a topping for ice cream. This makes about 10 pear quarters and will keep in the refrigerator about 1 week. Note: You must make this addition to your holiday table at least one day ahead, in order to get the pears to absorb the clove and cinnamon flavor and the bright red color. This will be a dramatic addition to your meal! Enjoy!

Caribbean Cruise with Rick Recipe Coockery Show

In this video, Betty returns to bettyskitchen after a 2-week hiatus. Betty and her husband, Rick, spent 10 days cruising the Caribbean, resting and relaxing, and enjoying cruise activities. This video shows a variety of foods and activities enjoyed on the Noordam ship of the Holland American Line. Sailing out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, we visited Half-Moon Cay, St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, Dominica, Curacao, and Aruba. We had a wonderful time, and the food was excellent! It was a nice break to have my food prepared for me! To answer your obvious questions--I gained 1 pound, and Rick gained 4 pounds, but we will easily take the weight off, now that we are not eating such rich food for every meal (and between meals)! Thanks for all the wonderful comments you left me, after I announced that I was taking a break! It is great to be back, and I hope to have a recipe ready to upload tomorrow! I have several Christmas treats planned!

Valentine's Day Red Velvet Cake Recipe Coockery Show

Beat 1 cup butter at medium speed with electric mixer until creamy. Gradually add 2 1/2 cups sugar, continuing to beat until light and fluffy. Add 6 eggs, one at a time, beating just until blended after each addition. Stir together 3 cups self-rising flour and 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder. Add to butter mixture alternately with 8 oz. sour cream, beating at low speed just until blended. Stir in 2 teaspoons vanilla and (2) 1-oz. bottles red food coloring. Stir until well blended. Divide batter into 4 equal parts, and pour batter into (4) 9-inch cake pans that have been greased and floured. Use 2 racks to bake the 4 layers in a 350 oven for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in each comes out clean. Remove cake pans from oven and set aside and cool to room temperature before frosting. Now, make your Cream Cheese Frosting. You will find an upload for this recipe in bettyskitchen, preceding this upload. Chill the Cream Cheese Frosting, and then assemble your cake. Remove each layer of cake from its pan, one by one, and place them on a nice cake stand. Spread Cream Cheese Frosting between the layers as you assemble your cake. Next, spread Cream Cheese Frosting around the sides of the cake, and finally on top. Swirl the frosting on the top and sides for a nice look. (I put 4 skewers, extending through the layers to make sure the cake would not shift before it had time to set up.) Place the cake in a refrigerator to firm up. This cake takes a lot of space, so you may have to dispense with the skewers or make only a 2-layer cake on a flat cake dish. (I removed a shelf from my refrigerator in order to accomodate the cake, after covering it with plastic wrap.) Keep the cake refrigerated, because the frosting is not meant to sit at room temperature. If you cannot use all of this cake at one time, you may cut it into usable chunks and freeze them. This is a gorgeous cake, and I think you'll love it! Happy Valentine's Day to Rick--and to all of you!!!
